Two Days In A Row!

Come on! Another 33/1 winner @ 60/1 on betfair gives the start of the week a big bang and the month a decent ending (almost). With one day to go a 112 point profit looks like investment eye candy right now. One more day won't ruin things will it? Another high was also reached today, 345 points since the beginning of the year. What a difference 2 days can make.

System Performance Mar 23rd to Mar 29th

After a crap Saturday with 3 more 2nd places to add to the tally Sunday came to the rescue and a big fat juicy 64/1 was landed. Ton Chee just 33/1 at the bookies was the saviour. The beginning of the flat turf season yielded no results from 22 except a 2nd placed and very nearly 75/1 shot Pusey Street Lady. Ah well. There will be plenty of big priced winners on the flat yet to come.

Overall on the week then a 50.17 point profit was achieved after the ubiquitous betfair tax is removed. At £25 per point thats +£1,254.25 on the week. Year to date a tidy +£7,489.00.

It's A Conspiracy!! :)

A nice profit on the day. Another 2nd!! And a winner disqualified!! You couldn't make this stuff up! So at least 20 points made on the day but when a winner at 15/1 gets disqualified for being just under weight after the bets were settled (and subsequently reversed) it really is drama of the highest order. Meanwhile in Australia it has to be said: Go Button!

System Performance Mar 16th to Mar 22nd

Dial "D" for Disaster is all there is to say after another promising start to the week that ended badly. O.k. so it's not the end of the world but it's a big slap in the face after posting a system high earlier in the week.

Since wednesday the profits just plunged like a shot through pheasant on the wing. A 41 point loss was compounded by a completely blank weekend. NUTS! At this stage I feel i daren't make a prediction for the final week in March. Come what may a brave face will be welded on regardless.

So here are the figures at £25 a point: -£1036.25 and 2009 year to date a profit of +£6,233.75 to be grateful for. The month of March in isolation is actually still showing a 22 point profit although my spreadsheets indicate 34 second places this month!!!

Break Out!!

Well folks another day, another dollar 3 winners and the systems have had another breakout. This time past 310 points year to date! For me at least it's very exciting as the month is currently 80 points in profit and the flat racing is coming.

The all weather systems will close at the end of the month so I've been thinking about looking into building an all weather "summer" system. After the bad start to the year with the poor racing conditions I've decided that 1,000 points to 1 point level sakes by year end is realistically achievable.

Because I've been so busy writing for the blog/newsletter and achieved some short term writing goals I've decided to scale back a bit on the writing for the time being although I shall obviously keep the system selections updated along with the betting reports after the days action is done so stick with it readers because there's a lot more profit to come yet.

Tipster Or Not To Tipster That Is The Question

The "make-believe" scenario: There's 3 large (£3k) sitting in your bank account wasting away due to low interest rates and comparatively high inflation. You managed to half-heartedly rescue this money from your £5k share portfolio that took a steep nose-dive in the fallout from the credit crunch. You don't like to gamble but you've seen how some of the "secure" financial institutions have been doing that very same thing with your money. The thing is, they lost some of your money on your behalf (how kind of them) and now you want to have more control on how your money is invested going forward. You're sick of waiting years for a declining return, you're disillusioned with the whole financial system so you're looking for a new way, a more profitable way.
You're watching the news when you get the idea. You've just seen Ap McCoy's legendary 3000th win in the sports news. You immediately fire up your laptop and the immortal word "tipsters" is typed into google. ENTER.
This scenario isn't as far fetched as it may first seem.....

Doing some much needed homework is not the only way to approach this subject but I would suggest that the more discerning, more successful investors will study for hours before making their mind up as to how and when they will part with the cash to try and build a lucrative fund or second income. So given that the world of horse racing tipsters has a very dishevelled, back-street image (see video) how does one negotiate the minefield and evaluate the plethora of information on offer? Without turning this article into a thesis on "horse wagering as an investment medium in the 21st century" I am going to write about my own approach and interpretation centered around a few basic questions I would ask.

  • What's the buzz surrounding this tipster service?

  • How long has this service been in operation?

  • Does this service "proof" their tips with a reputable independent proofing service?

  • How long have they been "live" proofing

  • Are the results transparent - is there a spreadsheet I can download?

  • How much are the annual subscription fees?

  • How much time will I need to expend on a daily basis to make it worth my while?

  • How much start-up capital will I need?

  • What are the returns to 1 point level stakes?

  • Is there a profit to be made at bookies SP or just advised prices only?

With those few questions in mind and having never done this experiment in the past I picked out one popular service in particular which currently has a waiting list to join. I slowly went through the spreadsheet data I obtained and re-organised said data so that I could interpret the results in a more meaningful (to me) way.

The service has been going for 5 years so there are plenty of results to analyse (almost 2000 bets). Given the apparent waiting list and having read various comments left on forums and review sites I'm pretty sure the reputation of this service ranks highly and would have a tick in the box if I were looking to join. I noticed the service has been proofing to an independent site since 2007 so another tick in the box for that one.

The annual subscription is a little on the high side at over £1,000 per anum but in this day and age it's not uncommon for a successful (or even unscrupulous) service to charge these kind of fees. The workload is very minimal and I would say from start to finish 15 minutes a day would be all that's needed to place the bets and there's no need to waiting to place bets near the off. 15 minutes a day even if you were to do this 365 days a year works out to around 90 hours work.

As for starting capital and in view of the fees being charged I would estimate a pot of £3,000.00 as being the bare minimum I would need in order to make a decent return over 1 year after paying subscription fees. I came to this conclusion after picking through the spreadsheet and noticing the worst losing run was 130 points and the worst performing year being a profit of 138 points. So my bare minimum bank would be 250 points and with £3k starting capital that would equate to 250 x £12 bets to start which I would then attempt to increase by doubling or trebling the original amount using ratchet staking. Ideally a £10,000.00 investment fund from the outset would be my preference for this particular service giving a £40 per point start to the proceedings.

This particular racing tipster has their own staking plan but after peeling back the results and applying 1 point level stakes it was clear that advised stakes are preferable and appealing but there is a substantial profit being made to 1 point level stakes nonetheless. I also looked up every win bet and applied bookies Sp instead of the advised prices (advised odds) shown on the spreadsheet (these prices/odds are proofed and obtainable). This took a great deal of time to do but is very worthwhile as it can be a very revealing test of a tipster's skills. At level stakes the prognosis is poor for these bets at bookies Sp but at recommended stakes a healthy profit is realised. So it would definitely indicate to me at least that these guys really know their horses.

In conclusion I would say that following horse racing tipsters is worthwhile provided you have enough funds to cover the subscription costs and give yourself a healthy head-start with a decent enough £ per point ratio. Finding a good tipster is just the beginning. Having yourself a business attitude to investing is of paramount importance. Sound financial education whether it be in gambling or other investment mediums is undeniably essential but you hardly need me to remind you of that. My own free systems available on this blog easily compare to this particular tipster in terms of profit on a yearly basis and that's no joke and not entirely the point! Trusting your hard -earned to a racing system is a stern test of faith in cold statistics whilst tipsters at least appear to be experts and therefore easier to trust and that's why I decided to write this piece in the first place.

If you're interested in following this article further then I strongly suggest you subscribe to my newsletter by popping your details into the boxes below. There is a follow up piece that contains all the information I've deliberately omitted from this article e.g. the tipsters name and website. This info and the detailed spreadsheets of results is available to newsletter subscribers only. Along with all the previous private article archives the newsletter is completely free.

Stay lucky! James.

System Performance Mar 9th to Mar 15th

From a loss last week of 49 points there is a profit just shy of 100 to report. 93.11 the actual total is a fantastic result for the week and the systems have posted a yearly high of 310 points this afternoon before falling back to 290 by the day's end.

In monetary terms at the now familiar £25 per point I'm happy to note that +£2,327.75 for the week brings the year to date total back up over £5,000 to +£7,263.50. Yum! Another week like that next week (hope) and the staking will change from £25 to £50 but more on that if it happens.

I'm just writing my "Tipster Analysis" articles. Getting all the spreadsheet calculations to a logical conclusion has been a difficult and quite laborious process but I'm pleased to have completed the task and can commence the articles ready for publication. Ciao for now and as ever stay lucky!

Belters For Chelters 2

Kicking myself after yesterday as I'd arrived at a shortlist of two for the first, Kempes who put in a good show despite a blunder at the first and coming 12th. The other which I failed to write up on the blog although uhmming and aah-ing about it was Go Native the winner at 12/1. DOh!

My other fancy Planet of Sound ran a great race but could only manage 3rd behind ForPaddyThePlasterer and Kalahari King (another who made the shortlist). So that's zero from 2 for me so far.

Today a slightly different approach in looking beyond Masterminded in the Queen Mother Champion Chase who romped home by over 20 lengths last year! He's going off well odds-on this year so after looking at the race I've decided on the winner without the favourite market. 2 fancies here for me (trying to avoid yesterday's mistake lol), Twist Magic @7.2 betfair and Big Zeb @5.1 on betfair also.

For the Coral Cup (16:00) I've chosen Pause & Clause (12.5 betfair) with Great Endeavour (trying for 16.5 - not yet matched).

Get Ur Free Cone....

Still keeping with the monstrous humour you'll be aware of the two winners pushing the systems back near to where they were at the beginning of March. But that freakish grin indicates just how delicately balanced the profit and loss has been for what seems an absoloute age and it could continue although it would be nice for the systems to push through the plateau and climb out the other side.

So to summarise todays action, no winners at Cheltenham but Sedgefield provided the goodies and a nice 20 point profit. There was also a chance to take another winner with Gunpoint (Sedgefiled 17:25) which although not a system qualifier at the SP price, it went off at well over 9's on betfair giving the backers marvellous value on the 13/2 bookie price.

Belters For Chelters?

Pinsticking was never a good look for anyone except grandma on Grand National day so having run some trends for two of the big races this arvo the Supreme Novices and the Arkle I decided to go one step further and check jockeys and trainers in said races for some extra guidance.

Here's my final selections for fun only.

In the supreme (13:30) I'm on Kempes trained by the Irishman Willie Mullins. The Irish raiders have shown themselves to be more than capable of landing the SNH in the past and look to be strong bets this year also. With Ruby Walsh in the saddle having ridden him to victory just last December at a higher weight than today Kempes looks promising at 10/1.

The Arkle (14:05) says "Planet Of Sound" to me. A PJ Hobbs contender with Richard Johnson up top @10/1. All 3 pieces of the jigsaw appear to be in form with Planet Of Sound having won on his last two outings with RJ on board both times.

There are still plenty of system bets this afternoon too. Back soon....

Repeat Performance? I Hope Not.

Keeping with the horror theme but in a smiley manner - a complete reversal of fortune. The week has begun with two winners at BFSP 12 & 45 respectively to reverse most of the damage done last week. All I Wanna Do.......

Having watched SlumDog Millionaire on Saturday night my mood was lifted with such a great piece of cinematography. A tale of rag to riches intertwined with a happily ever after love story it reminds the viewer that literally getting covered in shit can end in laughter and good times.

Looking to the week ahead everyone in the world will be embroiled in the trainer and jockey battles at Cheltenham. Which horses have the strength and stamina to overcome the odds and grab the glory?

Well unless your head has been buried in the sand at Southwell you'll have seen the numerous previews and reviews and all the hype and bullshit that goes with it. This week I'll be doing some of my own race reading and hopefully coming up with a few winners of my own but in between all this I've been promising an analysis of a racing tipster so please keep watching the blog because it's going to land in the midst of this weeks action and should give you a break from Cheltenham if only for a few minutes. Stay lucky!! JB

System Performance March 2nd to Mar 8th

In a week that promised so much and delivered so little the week from hell was the overall result. Writing about huge losses is not an easy thing to do let alone to admit to. I guess the only consolation prize is that the highest historical loss was never in danger of being breached which gives some kind of shaky confidence that this is a normal situation.

Just one winner from 97 qualifiers since Tuesday showed an 86 point loss. Luckily Monday boasted a good profit which reduced the weeks losses to 49 points. In monetary terms using a £10,000 bank and £25 per point a loss of -£1.212 on the week reduces the yearly profit to a still very respectable +£4,935.50.

Looking elsewhere it seems that the system's poor performance for 2009 is not just an isolated event. Over on JP's blog the tipster portfolio he follows is having a tough time of it too.

Just More Blah...

As the title says, another uninspiring afternoon to add to the collection. Well there was a winner but not enough to stop the rot from spreading. Today is one day in which I'd like to come out on top otherwise I may as well switch off and watch some old crap movie on the box it would be more rewarding.

No racing problems that can be detected. I just hope there's a couple of decent priced winners in there today. Stay lucky!

I'm Still Waiting!

Bloomin eck! 3 days 3 blanks! As ever this is always about dealing with long periods of downs and short periods of ups but knowing this is supposed to make it easier. Unfortunately knowing is never enough to be able to deal with the psychology of it. The easiest and only way in my opinion to deal with it is to be financially prepared. What I mean is, having enough bullets in the gun to be able to carry on firing for a long time. Long enough to hit some more valuable targets as they appear on the horizon.

The only other thing that helps is experience. Even so Benetwood almost scored and went under 1.4 in running for a stake returned free bet - came 2nd. Mc Gruders Cross was 3rd though well off the winning pace.

Interest Rates And Inflation

The bank of england is expected to cut interest rates to half of one percent today and at the same time print more money to ease perceived money supply problems caused by commercial banks unwillingness to lend money that they have. A rather simplified view I grant you.

For anyone saving money in a bank (low risk investment product?) account this is a complete disaster. Firstly they are losing money because interest rates are well below the rate of inflation. Secondly, with more money in circulation the value of existing money is going to drop (more inflation).

I'm no financial expert but this looks a very desperate solution if at all it can be called that. The parallel in gambling terms is like betting every favourite at sp prices. Over the long term the bank will be eroded.

Thank the universe for medium/long shots and enhanced odds. I say stick yer headphones on and tune out.

Are They Mad?

The bookies like to manage their liabilities as there's always the possibilty that a complete outsider will romp to victory and create the unthinkable large payout. So you'll rarely see anything going off at over 100/1 sp. Not the same thinking on betfair though. A 100/1 shot runs at 999/1 before the off this afternoon admittedly without much of a chance of winning.

The horse in question was My Only Boy in the 17:00 Fontwell bumper. Now I don't understand laying this horse at 1000 when he beats a 12/1 and a 16/1 shot into 7th place no matter how unlikely it is that he would have won. It was still possible.

Today was another blank. Adamo at betfair SP 141.5 in that same race got as low as 15 in running for a stake returned free bet but only managed to finish behind My Only Boy. NUTS! The only other highlight was Alfredtheordinary who was well backed and fell below the odds threshold which allowed me to scalp the value before the off for a nice winning free bet although not a very big one.

looks like tomorrows selections will be online around 14:00. Stay lucky.

A few non runners again today. If anything is spotted the blog will get an update. Stay lucky!

Be Square And Be There

A blank day for the systems yesterday punctuated only by a couple of memorable moments.

Ardesia 14:50 Newcastle went rather close in running at 1.4 so there was the option of a free bet which was gratefully taken and I had my stake returned.

The most exciting part of the afternoon was in the 16:10 at Southwell when a huge gamble in the last few minutes before the off saw the odds for Orange Square tumble from over 30 to just over 16. I had gotten on at 36 and laid off for a free bet before the off as OS became a non qualifier for the system. I then watched in running as the odds came right in to 2 but frustratingly no cigar again!! I've had so many of these big free bets in the past month fail to scoop the prize it's just criminal I tell ya!

I sent out the second newsletter early this morning so if you didn't get yours please check your spam folder you will not be disappointed trust me. If you're not a subscriber and want to join then please find the sign up form below this post. Today's racing selections to be posted around 13:45.

A Monday To Remember

Feeling way hung-over today I wasn't expecting too much to happen. How wrong could I be? A nice 24 pointer in the first at Lingfield followed by a 13 pointer at Stratford finishing with a 21 pointer at Wolves!!! Here's how I fared on betfair betting before the off: 20, 20 and 24! So all in all a fantastic day. 38+ points after tax is the official systems total and March has gone off with a big bang! Coupled with the 20 odds points from the 1st of March I make that 58 or so points in 2 days.

I think that the big one I sensed on Saturday translated into a series of smaller ones and hey I'm not complaining, the universe truly delivers! Anyone who's been following along so far will know that I tend to post the free selections fairly close to race time to account for any non runners. But they are always posted before racing. If you are thinking of following with small stakes and a decent sized points bank (300 minimum 400 advised) then please help yourself. I have around 20,000 system qualifiers on my spreadsheets that tell me the system isn't profitable just by chance.

The database indicates the first system selections for Tuesday 3rd march are at Southwell 14:10. I expect to post the final selections by 13:45. Stay lucky!

System Performance Feb '09 YTD

Just to clarify a few things before beginning. A week or so ago I was comparing my spreadsheets back with the database when I noticed the two were slightly out-of-whack. I decided to wait till month end to correct the figures on the blog.

Firstly February P&L.

Slightly crap but no disaster is how I would sum February up. Given the devastation to racing caused by "environmental factors" at the beginning of the month it should be no surprise to learn the the month is down. In terms of £25 per point I would put that in the region of minus £914.80 after 5% betfair tax. I have been constantly mentioning the missing big odds winners and they are still missing.

Going back to January, I had originally reported a profit of 274 points but after having checked the database the profit for January was actually slightly smaller at 263.38 points after tax.
Not a huge difference but a difference nonetheless. Add that to February's loss and a figure of 226.79 points is arrived at. Given the ROI/POT stands at 28% from 797 bets I'm very pleased so far. As mentioned in the last post a profit year to date of £5,669.00 to £25 level stakes.

Here's two spreadsheets with all the figures. The 1st one shows the level stakes points profit for 2009 and the second shows the profit with a £10,000 starting bank and level stakes bets of £25 per point for 2009 year to date. Ok I admit there's a lot of bets there and quite a handful to manage on a daily basis. If you decide to join my mailing list I'll give you some pointers on how to manage and make a handsome profit. Let's see how March fares. Cheltenham next week and the start of the flat at the end of the month.

System Performance Feb 23rd to Mar 1st

Didn't quite know where to start as there's been quite a lot happening/happened in the last couple of days. I suppose the week's update should come first. The week trundled along very well and a 23 point profit was reached on Friday night. Then on Saturday I mentioned that I had a feeling a big winner was going to land any time. Saturday passed with a small loss hey ho! (Read on to Sunday and Monday!)

I had some personal stuff to attend to on Sunday which half killed me and halted blog writing but that's another story. Whilst I was over exerting myself Sunday's qualifiers notched up a further 20 points and gave the week an up of just over 37 points to 1 point level stakes. Fantastic!

After a crap week and a crap month the week ended at 37.19 x £25.00 = +£929.75 year to date that was (Note the past tense. See Monday's update.) £5669.76

I'll deal with the monthly profit and loss in the next post.

Another straight-forwards day. Good news for the system yesterday a 20 point profit.

I'm just getting the results update in order and expect to post these this evening.

In the meantime a musical interlude followed by an afternoon of racing. Take care.

See You Soon Y'Hear?

Well I've got some personal stuff to attend to which will necessitate putting in the updates on Monday rather than tonight or tomorrow. The big win didn't materialise but a decent sized one did which gave a small loss on the day. Monday morning it is then?
